Millions of people in the country do not have access to safe drinking or clear water for sanitation purpose. India has just 4% of the world's fresh water — but 16% of the global population. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are linked to unsafe water and the lack of hygiene practices. Unclean water and poor sanitation are a leading cause of child mortality. About 315,000 children die from diarrheal diseases each year, with 140,000 deaths in India.
